PEN or PENCIL begins in Dollarway

The Interested Citizens for Voter Registration Inc. recently launched the PEN OR PENCIL: Writing A New History initiative at the Robert F. Morehead Middle School in the Dollarway School District.

PEN stands for penitentiary, and PENCIL stands for education, the two choices for “students and others across the country who live in a fierce struggle between crime, violence, and a future,” a spokesman said.

ICVR is Arkansas’ lead PEN OR PENCIL affiliate for the National Alliance of Faith and Justice and the local affiliate for the National CARES Mentoring Movement.

ICVR believes the PEN OR PENCIL program can strengthen academics, character and make a positive difference in the lives of students in Pine Bluff Schools.

PEN OR PENCIL is a national pilot program funded by the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention that is being implemented in nine states.
