PBHS student explores career in medicine

Pine Bluff High School 10th-grader Alex Ladd participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Houston, Texas, this summer.

At the Forum on Medicine, Alex joined other high school students who demonstrated academic excellence, leadership potential and an interest in medicine.

Throughout the 10-day forum held July 21–30, Alex was introduced to a variety of concepts in public health, medical ethics, research and general practice. He participated in site visits to The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Houston Methodist Hospital. A highlight of the forum was a simulation in which students were presented with a fictional patient’s case history and had to diagnose and develop a treatment plan for the patient.

The National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine created a virtual classroom with hospitals, clinical facilities and health care professionals. By shadowing key personnel, Alex had the opportunity to gain a behind-the-scenes perspective on a medical career.

In addition to the site visits to medical schools and clinical facilities, Alex also had the opportunity to hear from and interact with leaders within the medical field. He personally engaged with physicians, surgeons, researchers, scientists and medical educators as these professionals were at work.

Alex is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Ladd. He was nominated for NYLF by his Jack Robey Junior High counselor.
