Lime application to be given away at Rural Life Conference

One lucky Southern Pea grower at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Rural Life Conference will walk away with a lime application of up to two tons per acre for up to five acres.

The National Organization of Professional Black Natural Resources Conservation Service Employees has donated the liming application as a door prize to encourage and support producers participating in the Walmart Buy Local Southern Pea Initiative. Under the initiative, farmers grow and sell peas to Walmart for sale in local Walmart produce departments.

To be eligible for the lime, growers must have participated in the 2011/2012 growing season and plan to participate in the 2013 season, be present or have a proxy present at the 2013 Rural Life Conference Southern Pea Buy Local Initiative workshop, and have had their soil tested within the last three years.

Farmers should bring a copy of their soil test with them to the Rural Life Conference. Soil test results will be placed in a large basket and one will be drawn. The lime will be applied to a field that will be in production for the 2013 crop year. Payment will be made directly to the selected vendor at the going application rate.
