ICVR developing mentoring program

The Interested Citizens for Voter Registration Inc. Respect for Life Initiative is developing a CARES Circle to serve Pine Bluff’s most vulnerable children and to reduce homicides.

The Pine Bluff CARES Circle is an affiliate of the National CARES Mentoring Movement. Its goal is to reach out to mentoring organizations such as schools, faith-based and social organizations with a need for mentors.

The Pine Bluff CARES Circle is recruiting mentors to actively participate with the PEN OE PENCIL: Writing A New History initiative, a program now being implemented in the Robert F. Morehead Middle School on a weekly basis.

“We believe by providing more mentors into this community, we can began to reduce homicides and turn around these troubling statistics in our communities,” said the Rev. Jesse C. Turner, ICVR director, after noting high statistics for illiteracy, high school drop out rates, arrests and incarcerations among young black people, especially males.

The goal of the Pine Bluff CARES Circle is to recruit mentors and connect deeply with them by providing training, screening and other support to ensure they have what they need to maintain their mentoring relationships. The program will connect mentors with programs and initiatives in the city and county. Details: 536-7274.
