The Interested Citizens for Voter Registration Inc. — affiliate with the National Alliance of Faith and Justice Pen or Pencil: Writing A New History initiative — recently announced the winners of the Pen or Pencil Essay contest.
Students wrote about the theme — From Nonviolence to No Violence: Using words Not Weapons to Solve Conflicts. Judges were Pine Bluff Fire and Emergency Services Department Capt. Harold Clark, Lighthouse Academy Principal Sandra Smith-Jones and ICVR Board member Shirley Washington.
Winners in grades six-eight are:
• First place — Moriah Houston;
• And second place — Kerissa Gipson.
Winners in grades nine-12 are:
• First place: Amanda Everett;
• Second place: Kerry Gipson;
• And third place: Amber Adkins.
First-place winners received a $50 cash prize. Second-place winners received a $35 cash prize. Third-place winners received a $20 cash prize.
