Energy assistance to open at Resource Fair Monday

On Monday, at the Pine Bluff Convention Center, area residents can not only be a part of the Energy Opportunity Day Resource Fair, but also can apply for energy bill help through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

The energy assistance is administered through the Arkansas Department of Human Services – Office of Community Services and delivered locally by the Pine Bluff Jefferson County Economic Opportunities Commission.

LIHEAP assists households with home energy and heating bills including electric, gas, and other heating sources.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Pine Bluff residents who may be struggling to pay their energy bill right now to not only get that needed assistance but also be a part of such a huge event,” said David Knight, executive director of PBJCEOC.

Doors will open at 8 a.m. to begin accepting energy assistance applications and to begin the Resource Fair.

The fair will last two days and after the Resource Fair, PBJCEOC will administer LIHEAP in its five counties — Jefferson, Grant, Cleveland, Arkansas and Lincoln — while funds last. All applications will be accepted on a first come, first served walk-in basis applications and will be taken beginning each day at 8 a.m. and continuing until either 4 p.m. or until full capacity of applications able to process that day.

Applicants for LIHEAP assistance must meet income guidelines. For a household of one, monthly countable income is $1,481. Countable income includes check stubs, child support, unemployment, housing utility assistance, SSI, SSA, TEA, VAS and retirement benefits. To apply for assistance, the household should bring a copy of the current utility bill, social security numbers, and proof-of- income and date of birth for all household members. Shutoff notices will not be accepted. Clients must have a working knowledge of household resources. Additional information may be required during the interview process. Failure to provide verification requested may result in delay or denial of assistance. Checklist and No-Income verification forms are available now at your local EOC office.
