Arkansas Post to host archeology, National Park careers program

Arkansas Post National Memorial will host two programs in one on Saturday.

The first program will focus on National Park careers, including archeology. Kids will learn archeology basics, particularly how it is different from the movies. Part of this project includes a sandbox activity for a mock dig. Kids participating should plan on getting dirty.

The second part of the program will show the best way to get more out of a visit to National Parks through Junior Ranger programs, park passports and nature journals. Park rangers will talk about what to do if you get lost in the woods and go over Leave No Trace principles.

The tentative schedule is:

• 9-9:30 a.m. — National Park ranger careers,

• 9:30-10 a.m. — The basics of archeology,

• 10-11 a.m. — Mock dig in sandbox,

• 11 a.m. to noon — 12:00 National Park activities,

• Noon to 1 p.m. — Leave No Trace.

Children attending must be accompanied by an adult. Visitors attending may want to pack a lunch or snack. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen and bug spray are recommended. Participants are asked to make reservations: (870) 548-2207.
