Vesper Choir to perform in HBCU Choral Festival

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Vesper Choir will perform at the Coahoma Community College HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) Choral Festival at Clarksdale, Miss., at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Sponsored by the Coahoma Community College Lyceum Committee, the event will also feature choirs from Mississippi Valley State University, Alcorn State University and Rust College. The concert will take place in The Pinnacle, the main assembly building on the Coahoma campus.

The Vesper Choir is the select singing ensemble at UAPB. The choir has been in existence for more than 70 years, having been organized by professor Ariel Lovelace in the 1940s. Professor Shelton McGee conducted the Vesper Choir for more than 40 years before his death in 1999.

Michael J. Bates, interim chair of the UAPB Music Department and professor of music, has conducted the Vesper Choir since 1999. Since that time the Vesper Choir has continued the tradition of performing choral music of the highest quality. In addition to annual performance tours that have taken the choir across this country, in 2006 the Vesper Choir toured Italy and performed concerts in Rome, Florence, Venice and Milan, including performances at the Vatican and at historic St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice.
