UAPB to celebrate the many contributions of women

The contributions of women at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff will be honored Monday and Tuesday as part of the institution’s annual Women’s Celebration.

With the theme, “Empowering Women to Live Healthier, Happier Lives,” all events are free and open to the public.

The celebration will begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday with a panel on domestic violence that will feature Rhonda Lewis of CASA Women’s Shelter, Attorney Sandra Phillips and domestic violence survivor Alindria Carroll. The panel will take place in the L.A. Davis Sr. Student Union lounge.

The celebration will conclude with an assembly at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Vivian Flowers, a Pine Bluff native, will give the keynote address. Flowers is the director of recruitment for diversity at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, where she leads the institution’s minority recruitment efforts. She entered into the arena of academic recruitment after earning a master of public service degree from the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service. Flowers earned bachelor’s degrees in political science and rhetoric and writing from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Her career path and service background in the public, political, and non-profit sectors set the stepping stones that led to academic and professional endeavors in the public service arena. Flowers was executive director for the Arkansas Legislative Black Caucus and its foundation from 2003 to 2005, and worked as staff for the Caucus from 1997 to 2003. She also worked as committee staff for the Arkansas Bureau of Legislative Research as well as program coordinator for the Center for Healing Hearts and Spirits. Governor Mike Beebe appointed Flowers to the Arkansas Service Commission (ASC), and she was recently elected to the CASA Women’s Shelter Board of Directors in Pine Bluff. Her current service commitments also include the Arkansas Advanced Initiative for Math and Science, Pine Bluff Historic District Commission, Arkansas Mentoring and Networking Association, and Reach Out and Read/Arkansas.
