Star City High School art students recently drew attention to themselves by turning themselves into works of art.
Students in Roger Darren High’s art I classes used photographs of themselves as the inspiration for their own artwork as part of a drawing lesson on self-portraits.
A self-portrait is a representation of an artist, drawn, painted, photographed, or sculpted by the artist.
Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt van Rijn, Albert Durer, Jan Van Eyck, Frida Kahlo, Chuck Close, and Vincent Van Gogh are just a few of the famous artists from history who have used themselves as the inspiration for their masterpieces.
Although self-portraits have been made by artists since the earliest times, it is not until the Early Renaissance in the mid-15th century that artists can be frequently identified depicting themselves as either the main subject, or as important characters in their work. With better and cheaper mirrors, and the advent of the panel portrait, many painters, sculptors and printmakers tried some form of self-portraiture.
Each student worked from photographs in order to create a detailed self-portrait drawing. The lesson helped students to understand facial proportions, spatial relationships, and how to apply the elements of art in order to create artwork.
Prior to the lesson students learned to create contour drawings, apply value to drawings with shading, enlarge an image from a photograph using the grid technique, and utilize proper facial proportions.
The self-portraits created by the students will be on display in the hallway at Star City High School.
