The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Jefferson County, a part of the Senior Corps of the Corporation for National & Community Service, will participate in a National Day of Service honoring 9/11.
This year the project for 9/11 Day of Service is to have local heroes visit the schools and read a book to an early elementary class. Each book will spotlight a community hero. The goal in Jefferson County is to read a book to as many lower elementary classes as possible on Wednesday in honor of all the heroes who served Sept. 11, 2001.
One local hero and RSVP volunteer will go to each participating school. This year there will be representatives from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, the Pine Bluff Police Department, the Pine Bluff Fire Department, the White Hall Police Department and the Pine Bluff Mayor’s Office.
A partial list of elementary schools participating is Broadmoor, Southwood, L.L. Owen, Edgewood, Ridgway Christian, Gandy, Moody and Taylor.
The mission of the Corporation for National and Community Service is to improve the lives, strengthen communities and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering.
