PB woman instrumental in preserving Camp Taloha

Hear the words “Girl Scouts,” and you may think of camp almost as quickly as you think of Thin Mints.

For many, talk of Girl Scout Camp brings memories of s’mores after dinner, sing-a-longs around a campfire, and bonds forged in summer activities like canoeing, horseback riding, or swimming with your fellow Girl Scout sisters. Girl Scout camps offer tremendous opportunities for girls to learn self-reliance and confidence. Camp is a great place for a girl to unlock her potential and discover the world and the great outdoor adventures that await her.

Girl Scouts – Diamonds of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas has formed a new Tents and Trails Committee to assist the council in maintaining these beloved properties. Leading the charge for the Tents and Trails Committee in the Pine Bluff area is Regina VonTungeln, a former Girl Scouts staff member and current volunteer. VonTungeln, the former camp property coordinator for Camp Taloha in Pine Bluff, was instrumental in preparing Camp Taloha for program use for girls in the Pine Bluff area, and has remained a very strong advocate for Girl Scouting and Camp Taloha since leaving to accept a new position with the Sheriff’s Department. Serving as the project manager for the property, she completed a multitude of upgrades to the camp. Under VonTungeln’s leadership, the Tents and Trails Committee for Camp Taloha in particular will bring excitement to the property and pave the way for great program opportunities for girls in the area.

The Tents and Trails Committee seeks to engage volunteers who are interested in making an impact in their local areas and helping preserve these treasured camps for many, many years to come. The committee will work with the council property staff to provide community support to accomplish a number of maintenance and upgrades at the properties.

The Tents and Trails Committee will typically meet once in the fall, spring and winter of each year. Anyone who has a love of outdoors, an interest in helping girls develop leadership skills, or skills in building trades or land management is invited to become a member of the Tents and Trails Committee.
