The Purple Purse, the first thrift store to be opened by CASA Women’s Shelter, will hold its grand opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The store will be located at 1514 State State St.
CASA provides 24/7 crisis hotline, shelter, counseling, advocacy, educational services, and support groups to victims of domestic violence and their children. CASA built a new facility in 2012 and is experiencing a large increase in the demand for services.
According to Karen Palmer, executive director, hotline calls have increased, the number of victims and their children have increased, and domestic violence support group services have increased. In an effort to provided the needed services for these victims, CASA has decided to open a thrift store to provide needed funding for the additional victims.
“Over the years, thousands of women escape domestic violence situations,” Palmer said. “People come to us and we help transform lives. They come to us in a real crisis situation. Often times they’ve been physically/emotionally abused really badly, and we are able to help them regain a life of independence and freedom, from from violence. CASA believes that everyone deserves to live a life free from abuse.”
Palmer said people often ask how they can help. “This is an opportunity now where many people going through spring cleaning and getting rid of a lot of things … can come down and bring their items to our thrift store and donate their gently used items for a good cause,” she said.
Palmer said volunteers are also needed.
Whether you are buying or donating, 100 percent of the net proceeds from the thrift store supports victims of domestic violence and the services needed to keep them and their children safe.
The store will be open Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
