Dr. Lenore Shoults, executive director of the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, will speak at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff on April 25. Her presentation entitled “Start on Time to Win the Race” will begin at 1 p.m. in Room 222 of the Adair-Greenhouse Building.
Dr. Shoults’ speech is part of the UAPB Merchandising, Textiles and Design Program’s Speaker Series. The New Jersey native was among the first females to graduate from Rutgers University which had been an all-male institution since 1766. After earning art teaching certification, she began a career in costume and wardrobe work in Atlantic City. She later worked Broadway show tours where she met her future husband and eventually moved to Batesville, Ark.
Dr. Shoults started two small businesses and developed a talent for marketing and promotion. She later earned a master’s degree in communications and a doctorate in heritage studies with an emphasis in museum studies. Before becoming director of the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, she served as assistant director of the Arkansas State University Museum.
While her role at the Arts & Science Center combines Dr. Shoults’ passions for art, theater, the importance of math and science, and education, she still enjoys making costumes. Since arriving in Pine Bluff, she built Stuart Little’s costume, dance costumes for Hairspray and Bilbo Baggins’s costume for The Hobbit.
Dr. Shoults recently received the Patron of the Arts Award from the Arkansas Young Artists Association for “outstanding leadership, organizational stewardship, and commitment to education…”
The Arts & Science Center received the Arkansas Museum’s Association “Best Exhibition of 2012, In-House” award.
