Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority presents health forum


The Health Committee of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Delta Omega Omega Chapter, recently held an asthma and diabetes management forum at the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service Office, located at 500 S. Idaho St.

The forum included numerous activities designed to help participants understand and control both diseases. Angela Turner, a licensed practical nurse, provided diabetic screenings for participants, and Toni McCastle, media liaison, presented asthma management and the effects of second-hand smoke on the disease.

Sonya Anderson, a registered and licensed dietitian, discussed the importance of controlling diabetes with diet and exercise and offered information on control methods. The forum concluded with an informative and fun demonstration on diabetic cooking by Mary Ann Kizer, Jefferson County family and consumer sciences Extension agent, and Lisa Collins, Extension program assistant. Participants enjoyed sampling the foods prepared which included Cajun catfish, cinnamon apple raisin slaw, layered fruit salad, and fruit smoothies.

Tina Brown and Beverly Cotledge are the chair and co-chair of the chapter’s Health Initiative. Terri Jackson is vice-president and chair of chapter programs and Cynthia Bennett is chapter president.
