AKA and DST walk for heart health

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Delta Omega Omega Chapter, and the Pine Bluff Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., teamed up to celebrate American Heart Month recently at The Pines mall.

Understanding that heart attacks are the number one killer among women, the sororities saw a need to unite and create awareness with the first annual Red Pumps IV Your Heart walk. One hundred and two participants flooded The Pines mall with heart health in mind.

AKA supports the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign through its International Health Initiative and its Pink Goes Red campaign.

DST also embraces the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign through its Lifestyle Change Initiative and the Total Woman Healthy Weight Program. Together, the two sororities aim to create heart health awareness in Pine Bluff.

This year is a significant year for both organizations. Founded in 1913, DST observes 100 years of public service and community involvement. While AKA commemorates 100 years of incorporation.

“Pine Bluff is our community and what better time to collaborate with Delta Sigma Theta, than now, as 2013 marks a centennial milestone of service and sisterhood,” said Terri L. Jackson, president of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Omega Omega Chapter.

Plans for the second annual Red Pumps IV Your Heart walk are already underway.

“We cannot wait for next year. It is sure to be bigger and better. This partnership is symbolic of service, teamwork and healthy living. We had a great time,” said Charlene Kelley, president of Pine Bluff Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta.

Scott Green and The Pines mall provided a secure and comfortable venue for the inaugural event. Stacia Ward with the Jefferson Regional Medical Center Pine Bluff Wellness Center got the ladies’ hearts pumping with a warm up. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Delta Sigma Lambda Chapter showed up to cool off the walkers by passing out bottled water. Representatives from the Arkansas Department of Health, Alpha Kappa Alpha Alpha Rho Chapter and the Delta Eta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta were also present to exercise for a purpose.

Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta sororities will reunite during the month of February 2014.
