Downtown Pine Bluff will come alive with the sounds of jazz guitar when the Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, 701 Main St., hosts its monthly music series Live@5 from 5-7 p.m. May 4.
The classically trained, brilliant jazz guitarist Milt Jackson will perform.
Now a professor at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, Jackson gained an interest for the guitar at the age of 5 years old while attending kindergarten in Detroit.
“I remember my kindergarten teacher Mrs. Frye … would bring in people who did various jobs to give us some direction on what we wanted to do in life — such as the fireman, policeman, and businessman,” he says. “But once it was a musician [a guitarist], that did it for me,” states Jackson, adding, “I was in love with it from there on.”
By ninth grade Jackson was in a band called “D.J. and the Up-setters.” Since then, he has performed in many different bands, has been featured as a soloist, and has played music ranging from country to symphony orchestra.
Live@5 has been offering live jazz, blues, rock and roll, and country performances for more than six years on the first Friday of each month at ASC. The cost of the evening for ASC members is $5 and $10 for non-members. New for 2012, ASC is offering special ticket pricing — 10 tickets are $40 for members and $75 for non-members. The event is sponsored by M.K. Distributors.
The center is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, and is closed on Sunday. For more information, contact the center at 870-536-3375, email@example.com or visit the website at www.ArtsScienceCenter.org.
