Editor’s Note: The following is the second in a series of articles about how the Boys & Girls Club of Jefferson County has impacted the lives of its members.
The Boys & Girls Club of Jefferson County provides a program — Goals for Growth — teaching young people skills for setting and achieving their own personal, education and career goals. Sports, fitness and recreation programs are provided to develop fitness, positive use of leisure skills, appreciation for environment and social skills. Tutors are available to offer group homework assistance and guidance.
Kerry Gipson, son of Debra Cook, tells us how these program have affected his future and his life:
“My name is Kerry Gipson and since I’ve attended the Boys and Girls Club my life has changed for the better. My grades have improved, I’m no longer disrespectful, and my attitude is no longer existent. I’ve gone from a person who was mischievous to mature. I am a new me.
Attending Boys and Girls Club helped me understand that life is not a joke. It’s okay to have fun, but it’s the way I have fun. There’s a difference. I am glad I learned about the Boys and Girls Club when I did or who knows what would have happened. The Boys and Girls Club has helped me reach goals that I never thought possible. It is a lasting experience. There was no way I could go wrong.
I love the Boys and Girls Club. It’s a big reason I am who I am today. It’s the best thing that has ever happened to me. This would never have been possible without the help of Mrs. J, Ms. KP, Mr. Jarrett and Mr. Britt/Papa.”
