Dead hotel do-over needed

Rare is the day when our city is given the chance to undo a huge mistake. Fortunately, that day appears to have arrived. While the details have yet to be revealed (and neither party has committed to the idea), Bruce Rahmani owner of the blighted Plaza Hotel has offered to sell the once-thriving concern to the city at a cost of $3 million or lease the hotel to the city at $20,000 per month with no money down.

Are ballot choices worth the trouble?

The unspoken question in Judge James Moody’s Eastern District courtroom Monday was, how much trouble should the election process undergo to accommodate candidates who aren’t going to win anyway, and also to accommodate Arkansans who want to vote for them?

On the evening of July 21, 2015, Lottie Mae Brentley, 88 of Pine Bluff departed this life. Lottie was born on November 14, 1926 to Elbert and Beulah Watts-Allen in Lake Providence, LA. In her early years she attended high school in Caddo Parrish, LA.

RISON - Joe Lonnie Garrett, 83 of Rison, died July 25, 2015 in Pine Bluff, Ark. He was born September 30, 1931 in Thornton, Ark. to the late Henry and Vera Garrett. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the American Legion out of Little Rock, and a member of Shriner’s Tangier Temple of Omaha, Neb.

George Willis Berry, age 90, of Pine Bluff, died Wednesday, July 15, 2015, at Davis Life Care in Pine Bluff. Mr. Berry was born June 18, 1925, in Jefferson County, Ark., the son of the late Clifton E. and Maggie Cloye Berry.

WHITE HALL — Billy Eugene Inzer, 87, of White Hall, Ark., died peacefully at home July 12, 2015, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born September 5, 1927, at Smackover, Ark., a son of the late John Henry and Vera Abbie Stewart Inzer.

Beverly Fergusson Goggans was born July 27, 1939 in Pine Bluff, Ark. and passed away on July 10, 2015 in Little Rock after a prolonged illness. At various points in her life she was a member of the Altheimer United Methodist Church, Lakeside United Methodist Church of Pine Bluff, and St. James Methodist in Little Rock. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 15 at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Chapel By The Creek in Benton.
