David Halstead

REDFIELD — David Edward Halstead, age 82, of Redfield, died Monday, February 1, 2016. Born October 23, 1933 at Bloomingrose, West Va., he was a son of the late Ezra French Halstead and Etta McCalister Halstead. He graduated from Sherman High School in Seth, W. Va. in 1952. Mr. Halstead proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953-1957 and was stationed in Korea and at Quantico, Va.

HOT SPRINGS — Mavis L. Justice, 92, of Hot Springs, Ark. (formerly of Pine Bluff), passed away Sunday, January 31, 2016, at the Crossing at Riverside in Searcy. Mrs. Justice was born August 6, 1923, in Ward, Ark., a daughter of the late John and Carrie Moran Dennis.

PENSACOLA, FLA. — Danny Wayne Roberts also known as “Nad Trebor” passed away, on January 27, 2016 in Pensacola, Fla. with his family. Mr. Roberts was born July 23, 1951 in Pine Bluff, Ark. to Marvin Roberts and Mary Moore.

WARREN — Cherie Erwin Bradford, age 81, of Warren, died Monday, January 25 in Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. Mrs. Bradford is survived by her husband of nearly 62 years Bobby J. Bradford of Warren; four children, Tara Holmes of Amsterdam, Netherlands, David Bradford (Martha) of Banks, Ark., Michael Bradford (Kathy) and Renee Williams, both of Warren; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a brother, Lyndel Erwin and his spouse Annette Taylor Erwin; two nephews of Birmingham, Ala.; a sister-in-law, Sue Bussey of Shreveport, La., and a niece and nephew. Born in Banks, Ark., Mrs. Bradford graduated from Banks High School and received a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from the University of Arkansas at Monticello. She was editor of the student newspaper, as well as the student yearbook. She taught English at various Arkansas schools, including Kingsland, Holly Grove and Hermitage. She was a music teacher and librarian in the Warren School System for 41 years. Mrs. Bradford was a board member of the Arkansas Education Association and active in the National Education Association, participating in educational conferences throughout the U.S. She was one of the first teachers to work with the Headstart summer educational programs for underprivileged children. She was president of the Warren Junior Auxiliary and active in numerous charity events. She was a substitute editor of The Eagle Democrat. She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Warren, where she sang soprano in the choir and occasionally played the organ. She traveled extensively, going on motorcycle trips with her husband and visiting various cities and countries. Among her many interests were reading, playing the piano, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles and computer games. She was an enthusiastic football and basketball fan. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Friday, January 29 at Frazer Funeral Home in Warren with Rev. Philip Faris officiating. Pianist was Janice Sullivan and soloist Tim Erwin. STAR CITY — Jerel Dean Shumake Bates, 82, of Star City died Wednesday. She wasborn July 5, 1933 in Lincoln County to the late Henry F. and Inez Holloway Shumake. She was a member of Star City Church of Christ and was an inspector for School Apparel, Inc. Not only was Jerel a devoted wife and mother, she loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, more than words can express. She was a caring friend and enjoyed surprising people with various treats. She loved nothing more than to help and bring joy to those in need. Also preceding her in death were her husband, Herman Edward Bates; one brother, Henry Shumake, Jr.; two sisters, Esterline Gill and Sallie Gillespie. Survivors include one son, Billy (Jeanie) Bates of Star City; one daughter, Judy (Richard) Manning of Pine Bluff; three grandchildren, Julie Manning (Forrest) Johnson of Natchez, Miss., Ashley Bates (Kevin) Hawkins of Star City and Molly Manning of Pine Bluff; three great-grandchildren, Maggie Claire Bates Hawkins, Kooper Bates Hawkins and Mary Blair Johnson and her caregiver, Wanda VanDuren. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Friday at Griffin Funeral Chapel with Bro. Melvin Baxter officiating. Burial at Leek Cemetery. Pallbearers are Newell Gill, Jerry Shumake, Jimmy Powell, Kenny Gillespie, Greg Gillespie, Olen Bates and Roger Bates. SHERIDAN — Anna Hyde Camp Works, 97, of Sheridan, Ark., went to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 27, 2016, at her home. She was born March 15, 1918 in the Hardin Community, daughter of Charles and Sarah Taylor Hyde. Mrs. Works was reared and educated in Sherrill. She enjoyed quilting, making dolls, working puzzles and being with family. Mrs. Works retired from the West Bend Company. She was a member of the Church of God. Mrs. Works was preceded in death by her husband, Hershel Lee Works, whom she married March 11, 1950, in Pine Bluff; a son, Michael Works; brothers, Eugene and Clifford Hyde; and sisters, Ruth Buckley and Ruby Moore. Survivors include her sons, Rickey Works (Margaret) of Pine Bluff and Ronnie Rogers of Sheridan; daughters, Diane Works of Sheridan and Mary Ellen Camp Parker (Jesse) of Woodlawn; five grandchildren, Pamela Clark, Jesse Parker, III, Penny Noyes, Sara Works and Rainey Dawn; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a special family friend, Davia Phillips. Visitation will be Saturday, January 30, 2016, 1 p.m. until service time at Robinson’s. NORTH LITTLE ROCK — Aliene Jones-Parks, 54, formerly of Pine Bluff, died January 23, 2016, at her home in North Little Rock. She was born on September 15, 1961, to the late Alberta Jones-Jackson and Willie D. Everette, Sr. Aliene attended Gillett Public Schools before moving to Pine Bluff with her family. She later attended First Ward and Townsend Park Elementary. She graduated from Dollarway High School in 1979. Aliene was a hard worker that loved and lived life to the fullest. She is preceded in death by her brothers, Marshall “Sonnyboy” Anderson, Jr. and John “Johnny” Andrew Denmon, and her sister, Alberta “Sista’ Girl” Tatum. Aliene is survived by her husband, Hewitt Parks Jr; her only child, daughter Tasha Jones-Buckley and son-in- law Daryl Buckley, Sr. of Mesquite, Texas; two loving grandchildren, Michael J. Buckley and Faith N. Buckley. Also her memory will by cherish by her brother, James Earl Jones, Sr. and sisters, Earlene Jones and Shirley Williams; two special sister in laws, LuJuana M. Jones and Doris Denmon whom she loved very much. Aliene also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends to cherish her memories.

Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Saturday, January 30, 2016 at Greater Second Baptist Church in Little Rock, Ark. by Reverend Elton Taylor. DAMASCUS — Ralph A. Mateen, 79, of Damascus, Ark. died January 22, 2016 at UAMS Medical Center. He was born June 6, 1936 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Thompson. He was preceded in death by his brother, Napoleon.
