William Eugene Sayles Sr. was born on July 5, 1932 to the union of Eugene and Alberta Sayles in Valobusha, Miss. He married Vernice Jackson in December 1957, and to this union five children were born. She preceded him in death. Later in life, he married Vora Monk.
William entered his final rest on October 9, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at his home. He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife, Vora Sayles; four sons: Brent (Shirley) Sayles, Nashville, Tenn.; William (Mardyn) Sayles, Jr., Muncie, Ind., Carl (Annette) Sayles, Atlanta, Ga.; and Ronald Sayles, Pine Bluff, Ark.; three daughters: Velma Sales, Nashville, Tenn., Emma (Donald) Wilken, Wisconsin; Connie (Tracy), Batlett, Tennessee; one brother: Harrison Sayles, Stanford, Connecticut; two sisters: Luberta Melvin (Charles) McCarter, Detroit, Mich.; Pauline (Donald) Brown, Champaign, Ill.; two stepdaughters: Remma Willis and Evelyn Willis, Forrest City, Arkansas; one stepson: Ellis (Flora) Monk, Bastrop, La.; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one long time friend, Eddie; one goddaughter, Kathy Taylor; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 18, 2013, at Mount Nebo Missionary Baptist Church with the Reverend Larry C. Battles officiating. Interment will be in Graceland Cemetery by the P.K. Miller Mortuary. Visitation will be held at the mortuary Thursday, from 1-6 p.m. Mr. Sayles will lie in repose at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
