MONTICELLO – LaVerne Redmond Norton, age 96, of Monticello, (formerly of Pine Bluff) died Thursday, August 14, 2014, at The Woods of Monticello in Monticello. Mrs. Norton was born September 18, 1917, a daughter of the late MM and Myrtle Coulson Redmond.
Mrs. Norton was reared and educated in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School. She was a resident of Pine Bluff and Monticello where she spent her last years.
She was a longtime member of First Christian Church in Pine Bluff and later, the Rose Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Monticello. She worked at Dillard’s Department Store as a secretary for several years, retiring in 1985, and Arkansas Distributing Company in Monticello and she owned a T-shirt shop.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Harold Norton, Sr., whom she married October 19, 1937, in Grant County, Ark., five siblings, a daughter, a granddaughter, and a great-granddaughter.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Marvin Harold Norton, Jr. and Betty of Monticello; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and James C. Reeves of Lynchburgh, Va., and Kathy and Michael Graham of New River, Ariz.; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary of Rose Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Monticello with Reverend Bruce Hamilton officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery in Pine Bluff with Reverend Delores Stroud officiating.
The family will receive friends at Robinson’s Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. and at the church Tuesday morning one hour before service time.
