Janet Speers Wagstaff, 99, of Pine Bluff died Friday, July 3, 2014 at Trinity Village Medical Center.
She was born on June 18, 1915 in Pine Bluff, a daughter of Josie Withers Speers and Henry Byrd Speers.
After graduating from Pine Bluff High School in 1932, she moved to New York City where she worked as a secretary for the National Surety Corporation and the law firm Breed, Abbott & Morgan.
On December 23, 1939 she married Robert Rhamy Wagstaff in Washington, DC. After her husband, a Lieutenant in the Naval Reserve, completed his service in the Electronics Division of the Bureau of Ships in 1946, the couple moved to Swarthmore, PA where they raised their two sons.
In 1965 they moved to the William Penn House, a center city Philadelphia Co-op apartment complex, where Janet was active with the Women’s Auxiliary of the Philadelphia Orchestra and where her husband could walk to his office.
After her husband retired in 1975, they spent their winters in Hampstead, NC until he died in 1983.
Janet then moved back to Pine Bluff where her mother and sister were living. In Pine Bluff she was active in the First Presbyterian Church and the Local Chapter of the D.A.R. until health problems forced her to move into Trinity Village Medical Center in 2003.
Janet is survived by two sons, Robert R. Wagstaff, Jr. and his wife Phyllis of Cape Elizabeth, ME and Richard J.Wagstaff and his wife Katherine of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Jennifer Abyhoff and husband Jack of Montclair, NJ; Bryan Wagstaff and wife Kimberly of Boulder, CO; Andrew Wagstaff of New York City and Olivia Wagstaff of Washington, DC; her great-grandchildren; Brittany, Katya and Alexander Abyhoff and Eden and Hendrix Wagstaff.
Graveside services will be held at Bellwood Cemetery on Saturday, July 12 at 10:00 a.m. Arrangements are by Fuller Hale-South Funeral Services.
