MENA — Gertie Smith Phelps, age 95, of Mena, formerly of Pine Bluff, died Tuesday, November 19, 2013.
She was born March 6, 1918 at Rowell, a daughter of the late William Reson Smith and Clara Thornton Smith. In her early teaching career, she taught for two years and was principal for one year in the Woodlawn School District. She was a teacher in the Watson Chapel School District for 43 years prior to her retirement in 1982.
A member of Salem Missionary Baptist Church, Mrs. Phelps also belonged to the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association and the American Business Women’s Association.
Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Hollis T. Phelps; her son, Gary Phelps, her daughter, Resa Diane Phelps, siblings, Estelle Floyd, Mildred Roberts, and Glen Smith, all of Pine Bluff, and J. D. Smith of Gentry, Ark.
Mrs. Phelps’ survivors include her daughter-in-law and caregiver, Joyce Phelps; grandchildren, Renee Phelps White and husband Cliff, and Christopher Phelps and wife Amy; and great-grandchildren, Buddy White, Elizabeth White, Joshua White, Hollee Phelps, and Nickolas Phelps.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, at Salem Missionary Baptist Church with Brother Howard Loetscher officiating. Interment will follow in Rowell Cemetery by Fuller Hale-South Funeral Services.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
