Edna Mae “Skippy” Ussery, of Pine Bluff, passed away on July 13, 2014. Born February 1,1926, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, she was the daughter of the late Joseph W. and Bertha Merrrill Gray. As a small child she acquired the nickname “Skippy” and went through life by that nickname. She was christened as a baby in the First United Methodist Church of Pine Bluff and was a lifetime member.
Skippy graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1943. After graduation she attended Fuhr School of Business. She worked for AP&L and Walter Theis, CPA, before being employed by J.R. Pierce, Sr., as his secretary at Unity Water (formerly General Waterworks Corp.) After 34 years of service she retired as secretary to the manager. She lived in Pine Bluff all her life except for five years in Tampa, Florida working for the Florida Steel Corporation as secretary to the Vice President of Fabricated Steel. Her membership in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority has spanned over a period of 68 active years, and she is a lifetime member. Honors and recognition include, Order of the Rose, Silver Circle, Golden Circle, and the Diamond Circle. Skippy had served as chairman and co-chairman of all sorority degrees with the exception of Ritual of Jewels. After moving to Tampa, Florida she transferred her membership to an Exemplar Chapter.
Skippy was a member of the American Business Woman’s Association. She served as president of Port O Cotton, Progressive, and Saracen Chapters of Pine Bluff. She was the ninth International President of the International PBX Clubs. She previously served as president of the Arkansas State PBX club and Pine Bluff PBX club.
Her many hobbies included making assorted craft items dancing, swimming, sewing, traveling, collecting recipes, tea pots, angels, and clowns.
Skippy was preceded in death by her husband, W.V. “Dub” Ussery; her parents; her sister; two brothers and granddaughter.
Survivors include two daughters, Diana Gilbert Jones (Raymond) of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and Danette Gilbert Salazar (David) of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren, Travis Jones (Christy) of Tacoma, Washington, Chad Jones (Helene) of Savannah, Georgia, Matthew Emory (Jennifer) of Houston, Texas, and Lindsey Emory of Houston, Texas; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be 2:00PM, Saturday, July 19, 2014 in the Chapel of Ralph Robinson and Son with Reverend David Fleming officiating. Burial will follow in Bellwood Annex Cemetery.
