Vernita Miller

Mrs. Vernita Sue Miller, 46, of Pine Bluff, passed away Friday, August 15, 2014. She was born in Pine Bluff to the late Vernard Cole and Stella Mae (Wiley) Taggart. Her survivors include, Husband, Kenneth W. Miller, Sons, Kenneth Cole, Antwone Miller, Daughter, Tiffany Cole all of Pine Bluff; Brothers, Charles Wiley of San Antonio, Texas, Larry Taggart and James Henry Taggart both of Pine Bluff; Sisters, Irma J. Stewart of Flint, Michigan, Marguerite Taggart Patton, Willie Ann Martin both of Pine Bluff, Angela Gray of Kansas City, Missouri; Eight Grandchildren. Her services will be 11a.m., Friday, August 22, 2014 at Grace Temple Baptist Church by Reverend Kenneth Stewart. Interment will be in Forrest Lawn Cemetery. The body will lie in-state Friday 10:45 a.m. until time of service.

William Barnes

GREEN HILL COMM. - William R. “Mr. Bill” Barnes, age 80, of the Green Hill community, passed away Tuesday, August 19, 2014, at the Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello. Survivors include his wife, Mavis Worbington Barnes of Monticello; one son, Richard Barnes of Monticello; one daughter, Karen Barnes of Little Rock; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Barnes of Monticello; three sisters, Janet Lawton of Russelleville, Margaret Ann Graves of Monticello and Bernice Waldrip of Forney, Tx.; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Chance Gober

WHITE HALL - Chance Jason Gober, 40, of White Hall, died Sunday, August 17, 2014 near Hoxie. He was born November 12, 1973 in Sacramento, California, son of Johnny Gober and Carole Owen Gober Mullins. Chance was reared and received his early education in White Hall before moving to Shirley, Arkansas his senior year of high school and graduating from Shirley High School. He served in the United States Navy. Chance worked for Union Pacific Railroad and was an engineer at the time of his death. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his children. Chance loved playing and coaching baseball. He watched and coached his sons in the White Hall Little League for many years. Chance was preceded in death by his daughter, Estee Alexandra Gober; father, Johnny Gober; grandfather, Charles Owen; and great-grandparents, Jack and Josie Owen. Survivors include his wife, Heather Glass Gober of White Hall; sons, Zach Gober and his wife, Ashley, Clay Gober and Jack Gober, all of White Hall; mother and step-father, Carole and Jimmy Mullins of Star City; brother, Dustin Gober of Star City; sister, Jennifer Wells of Pine Bluff; grandmother, Jean Owen of Monticello; and grandchild, Bentley Gober. Funeral services will be Friday 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 22, 2014 at Family Church with Pastor Stephen Harrison officiating. Burial will follow in Leek Cemetery in Star City by Ralph Robinson & Son Funeral Directors. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Robinson’s. Geraldine Harrison

WHITE HALL - Geraldine Harrison, 78 of White Hall, Ark., departed to her Heavenly home on August 17, 2014. She was born June 12, 1936 in Cairo, Illinois, later moving to Ark. to marry the love of her life of 59 years. She was a member of Family Church in White Hall. She was an avid homemaker, wife and mother, and loved the Lord with all her heart.

Robert Shepherd

SHERIDAN - Robert Leo Shepherd, of Sheridan, Arkansas, was born on November 9, 1940, in Sheridan, the son of the late Ersel and Pauline Hamner Shepherd. He graduated in 1959 from Sheridan High School. Robert spent his life serving the people of Grant County. From 1969 to 1979, he served as both the county’s assessor and treasurer. Robert spent his following ten years serving as sheriff. In 1989, he was appointed, by then Governor Bill Clinton, the first Arkansas State Drug Director. After retiring for the first time, he returned to work and filled the position of Grant County 911 Coordinator. During this time, he was instrumental in the development and implementation of the current Grant County 911 system. After serving in this office, once again he retired. He then returned to the sheriff’s office serving two additional terms from 2005 to 2006 and 2009 to 2010.

Robert Dodson

SALEM, OREGON - Robert Dean Dodson of Salem Oregon, formerly of Monticello died August 13, 2014 in Salem Oregon. He was born in Monticello, Ark., on October 10, 1942 to parents Rufus Earl Dodson and Dellar Crews Dodson. He proposed to Geraldine Ellen Fowler on August 11, 1967 and they married on February 10, 1968. Bob worked as a construction superintendent residing in various states such as Arkansas, California, Colorado and Oregon.

Ressie Scifres

RUSSELLVILLE, KY. Ressie Estelle Croxton Scifres, age 98 of Boyles Drive, Russellville, Ky., passed away August 17, 2014 at Creekwood Place Nursing and Rehab in Russellville, Ky. , She was born in Saline County, Ark., on July 18, 1916 to the late Argus Croxton and Effie Scarbrough Croxton. She was an educator with the Arkansas School System for 25 years and member of Southern Heights Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by husband, Cullen Scifres.

Mary Smith

OKLAHOMA CITY - Mary Louise (Hicks) Smith, 95, homemaker and former resident of Pine Bluff, died August 15, 2014 in Oklahoma City. She was born to Lorie Ted and Anna Lee (Offutt) Hicks of Kingsland on November 3, 1918. Visitation will be Friday, August 22 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Benton Funeral Home in Fordyce. A memorial service will be held 10:00 am Saturday, August 23 at Benton Funeral Home in Fordyce. Burial will follow at Ebenezer Cemetery.

GRADY - Mary JoAnne Cresswell, of Grady, passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at her home. Daughter of the late Earl and Bertha Dobson, JoAnne was born on July 25, 1932 in Almyra.

REDFIELD - Twyla Kashae Kurtz, age 32, of Redfield, died Saturday, August 16, 2014. Born June 14, 1982 at Indianapolis, she was a daughter of the late William Chapman and Kathleen Mills Chapman. Twyla was a member of White Hall Free Will Baptist Church, and was also predeceased by a sister, Krista Chapman.
