UAMS graduate student faces rape charge

LITTLE ROCK — A graduate student at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has been arrested on warrants for rape and second-degree sexual assault, authorities said Friday.

Officers with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office arrested Paul Wayne Perkins, 37, of Sherwood at UAMS on Thursday, according to an arrest report. Perkins is accused of sexually abusing a juvenile female over the past eight years.

UAMS spokeswoman Leslie Taylor said Perkins is a Ph.D. student who receives a $24,000 stipend for research work. The leadership of the graduate school will meet next week to discuss what action to take, but in the meantime Perkins will not be back at UAMS, she said.
