Ex-Trumann High School teacher convicted of sexually assaulting student

LITTLE ROCK — A former Trumann High School teacher was sentenced to 25 years in prison Wednesday for sexually assaulting a former student with whom he fathered a child.

A Poinsett County jury found Danny Shane Akers, 40, of Trumann guilty of one count each of first-degree sexual assault and fourth-degree sexual assault following a three-day trial in Harrisburg, said Scott Ellington, 2nd Judicial District prosecuting attorney.

Circuit Judge John Fogleman also ordered Akers to pay a $25,000 fine.

The victim was under 16 when she became pregnant. An Arkansas State Crime Lab report indicated there is 99.999 percent probability that Akers is the father, Ellington said.

“Teachers have a duty to protect children, not abuse them,” Ellington said in a news release. “This 15-year-old victim was vulnerable and Danny Akers took advantage of her. We are pleased that the jury has held Mr. Akers accountable for his crimes.”
