Two killed in separate traffic accidents

A Sheridan woman was killed Wednesday when she hit the rear of a parked tractor-trailer in Grant County, and a Hamburg man died Friday after a two-vehicle accident in Ashley County.

According to a preliminary report from the Arkansas State Police, Paula M. Francis, 45, of Sheridan was southbound on Grant County Road 75 and hit the back of the truck, which was parked in the southbound lane.

The accident was reported at 6:15 a.m. According to Trooper Marshal Williams, the weather was clear and the roadway dry at the time of the accident.

In the other accident, Harold J. Hollis, 66, of Hamburg was northbound on U.S. Highway 425 when the 2004 Hyundai Elantra he was driving crossed the center line and hit a southbound 2007 Mitsubishi driven by Claire Chapman, 58, of Monticello.

Chapman was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center at Pine Bluff after the accident, which was reported at 7:40 a.m.

Trooper First Class Donald Crow said in the preliminary report that the weather was cloudy and the highway was wet at the time of the accident.

The two deaths brings to 458 the number of people killed on the state’s highways so far this year.
