Police report finding gun, suspected drugs after traffic stop

A traffic stop by police Tuesday afternoon on a vehicle with a broken windshield resulted in the arrest of a Pine Bluff man on drug-related charges. Deangelo Smith, 25, allegedly had Hydrocodone, Xanax and marijuana in his possession when vice and narcotics officers stopped the car Smith was driving in the 1500 block of West 19th Avenue.

Deputy Prosecutor Maxie Kizer said the officers also found a loaded handgun under the seat of the vehicle.

According to a probable-cause affidavit from Detective Jeremy Funderburg, the officers noticed a strong smell of suspected marijuana when they approached the vehicle, and a check of the license plate number showed that the license plate was registered to another vehicle.

In addition to the gun and suspected drugs, Funderburg said in the affidavit that a set of digital scales was found in the vehicle.

Pine Bluff District Judge John Kearney set a $50,000 bond for Smith on Thursday after ruling that prosecutors had probable cause to charge him with three counts of possession of a controlled substance with purpose to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia and simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms.

Smith said he would hire his own attorney.
