Drew Central teacher accused of sexual assault


A 57-year-old teacher at Drew Central High School was arrested Wednesday for allegedly having inappropriate contact and communication with a 16-year-old female student, according to a news release from the Drew County Sheriff’s Office.

The teacher, Helen Banks of Monticello, is accused of second-degree sexual assault, a Class B felony.

According to the news release, Banks was interviewed by State Police and Drew County Sheriff’s Office investigators and admitted to the allegations.

She was subsequently arrested, booked into the Drew County Detention Center, then released on a $25,000 commercial bond.

The case file will be forwarded to 10th Judicial District Prosecutor Thomas Deen for a charging decision.
