Bond set for shooting suspect

A $50,000 bond was set Thursday for a Pine Bluff man who allegedly shot another man late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

Jefferson County District Judge Kim Bridgforth set the bond after ruling that prosecutors had probable cause to charge Corey Henderson, 32, with first-degree battery and with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Deputy Prosecutor Bryan Achorn said Henderson is on felony probation in Jefferson County Circuit Court on drug-related charges, and had 16 prior failure-to-appear warrants from 1999 to 2013.

Henderson is accused of shooting Deron Henderson, 36, after an altercation between the two that allegedly stemmed from a comment Deron Henderson made about a female relative of Corey Henderson.

Testifying at the probable-cause hearing, Detective Jerry Lambert said the victim and the suspect are not related.

Lambert said police were sent at 1:03 a.m. Sunday to Jefferson Regional Medical Center, where Deron Henderson was being treated for gunshot wounds to the leg.

Deron Henderson told police he tried to apologize to Corey Henderson after making the comment but Corey Henderson pulled out a small-caliber handgun and fired several shots that missed Deron Henderson.

Lambert said Deron Henderson then told Corey Henderson “if you’re gonna shoot me, shoot me,” and Corey Henderson allegedly fired more shots, hitting Deron Henderson.

Corey Henderson turned himself in to police Wednesday and Lambert said that when he interviewed Corey Henderson, Henderson allegedly admitted firing several shots.

In addition to setting the bond, Bridgforth ordered Corey Henderson to have no contact with Deron Henderson until the case is settled.

Corey Henderson said he would hire his own attorney.
