The Watson Chapel School Board is initiating a process to appoint a person from the district’s Zone 2 to serve on the six-member panel until the next board election.
Superintendent Danny Hazelwood announced Director Keith Waddle’s resignation at a Monday night board meeting. Waddle informed Hazelwood of his decision in an Oct. 29 letter. Waddle wrote that his resignation was effective immediately as he had moved outside the district.
Efforts to contact Waddle by telephone were unsuccessful.
Hazelwood also announced the respective dates for the district’s Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday meals for parents and students at school cafeterias as Nov. 22 and Dec. 13.
In the board’s business session, it unanimously — with Director Maxine Nelson absent — supported Hazelwood’s recommended hiring of Cameo Humphrey as a bus driver and Dorothy York as a substitute cafeteria worker. The action followed a 35-minute executive session.
The board selected Director Sandra Boone as a attendee of an Arkansas School Board Association delegate assembly on Dec. 11 in Little Rock. Nelson is an automatic delegate as a member of the ASBA Board.
The delegate assembly is ASBA’s policy-making body. The organization’s annual conference is being held from Dec. 11-13.
Hazelwood and the board received an Edgewood Elementary School construction update from architects Dave Sadler and Richard Taylor of The Nelson Architectural Group. Sadler said the initial phase — earth and much of the storm drainage work — had gone well, even though it slightly exceeded a budgeted amount.
Sadler said the excess expense won’t cause any damage to the overall budget, which is open to some adjustment.
The second and third phases of the 34th Avenue and Apple Street project will be demolition of the current school and construction of the new facility.
