Taylor Elementary counselor: Christmas Fund makes big difference

Taylor Elementary School counselor Amy Allen said the Christmas Card Fund has made a big difference at their school.

Allen, excited to tell “a wonderful story,” said a 9-year-old student, after being asked to write down a desired toy for Christmas, wrote that she would like a bed.

“It took me by surprise,” Allen said. “I didn’t know if she meant a real bed or maybe a bed for her doll or something.”

Wanting to make sure, Allen asked a few questions to determine if the student had a genuine need. She learned the student wanted a bed for herself.

“She told me she sleeps wherever there’s a place,” Allen said. “It breaks your heart to hear a child say their desired toy is a bed.”

Touched by the student’s request, staff members began making donations, but they still needed more. Using money from the Christmas Card Fund, they were able to make the purchase. Thanks, in part, to the Christmas Card Fund, a child now has a bed to call her own.

The Christmas Card Fund is made possible through the generosity of The Commercial’s readers. As of the close of business Friday, this year’s fund stood at $1,826.

The money collected through the fund will be divided among the four public school districts in Jefferson County. The Commercial does not retain any of the money to cover administrative costs.

Contributions to the Christmas Card Fund may be made to Pine Bluff Commercial, P.O. Box 6469, Pine Bluff, AR, 71611. Donations can also be brought by The Commercial office, 300 S. Beech St., weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Those who give at least $1 may have their names placed on a Community Christmas Card to be printed in The Commercial before Christmas.
