Sheriff’s Office seeking man for first-degree battery

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office investigators are asking for help in locating a man who allegedly caused serious injuries to another man during a fight at the W. C. “Dub” Brassell Adult Detention Center.

Maj. Lafayette Woods Jr. said in a press release that George A. Austin Jr., 29, is wanted for first-degree battery that occurred Monday, June 16.

Austin and a former detainee, Paul Washington, 42, were involved in an altercation that turned physical after Washington reportedly tried to aid his brother, Malcomb Hadley, who was also a detainee at the jail.

After the fight, Washington was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center for medical attention and underwent surgery but Woods said Washington’s condition has not improved.

A bond of $250,000 has been set for Austin and anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact Lt. Jennifer Carr at 541-5496 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. or call the dispatch center at 541-5300 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

All calls will be kept confidential.
