Students at Ridgway Christian School were busy Monday packing and sealing more than 10,000 meals for hungry children in Harlan County, Ky., as well as supporting shelters for local children in Pine Bluff as part of the school’s Feed the Need project.
The work event also helped RCS raise funds for its own capital improvements and growth.
Energy and enthusiasm permeated the gymnasium, located at the main campus on Ridgway Road, as the crowd worked together. There was upbeat Christian music, and the children chanted cheers to each other that they had created just for the event. The school was well supported by their community, with The Chairman’s Club (“Redcoats”) from the Pine Bluff Chamber of Commerce as well as representatives from several local businesses coming to help.
The Jefferson School of Nursing promoted health and safety principles by sending a group of nursing students to assist the younger children. They instructed on hand sanitization along with properly placing their hairnets and gloves before handling the food products.
RCS is the first school to host a mission-based Feed the Need event in the state of Arkansas. Rather than selling cookie dough or other products, the families in the school raised sponsorship money to host the event, being sponsored to pack in the “pack-a-thon.” Approximately 35 percent of the money raised funds the mission.
Remaining funds will go toward gymnasium air-conditioning improvements, roof painting and library enhancements.
Linda Davidson of Star City shared her past mission experiences in Harlan County with the high school students, and said “I am so excited to see the school take this direction with their project. It allows the students to be part of a hands-on mission project during their normal fundraising time. It will be a very good life lesson for them.”
