Police officer shot in apparent ‘friendly fire’ incident

One Pine Bluff police officer was injured and a second was placed on administrative leave with pay early Friday morning after a shooting incident at a business in the Watson Chapel area.

Lt. David Price of the Pine Bluff Police Department said officers were conducting surveillance inside the Tobacco Outlet at 3800 S. Camden Road, because the business had been burglarized several times recently, when a patrol officer found an unsecure door at the back of the business.

When the patrol officer entered the business, he came into contact with a dark figure holding a weapon. A shot was fired and the surveillance officer was hit in the arm.

Price said the wound was not life-threatening and the officer was treated and released from Jefferson Regional Medical Center.

The names of the officers involved in the incident will not be released pending an investigation by detectives and an internal investigation, Price said.

The patrol officer who fired the shot was placed on administrative leave.
