One man was killed and a second wounded on the north side of Pine Bluff Sunday night. After an investigation, police said the two men apparently exchanged gunfire.
Jefferson County Coroner Chad Kelley said John Burnett Jr., 18, was pronounced dead in the emergency room at Jefferson Regional Medical Center at 10:01 p.m. of an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body. Kelley said the body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office at Little Rock for an autopsy.
The second man, Reginald Lee Jr., 26, received wounds to the back and neck and was also taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center for treatment. Police Sgt. David De Foor said Monday afternoon that Lee has since been released.
Police were initially sent Sunday night to 2504 Reeker St. where they found Lee, who had two gunshot wounds. While there, officers received a call that sent them to the intersection of L.A. “Prexy” Davis Drive and Bell Street, where Burnett was found.
The initial investigation indicated that the shooting actually occurred in the 1200 block of North Willow Street and both men left that location for unknown reasons.
De Foor said two weapons believed to have been used in the incident were recovered but the motive for the slaying is still under investigation.
The death of Burnett was the fourth homicide in Pine Bluff so far this year. Police have made arrests in the other three cases.
