Jail inmate critical after reported fight

A fight at the W. C. “Dub” Brassell Adult Detention Center on June 16 resulted in what sheriff’s office officials described as “critical injuries” to a detainee.

Major Lafayette Woods Jr. said Paul Washington, 42, and another detainee were involved in an altercation that turned physical after Washington reportedly tried to defend his brother, Malcomb Hadley, who was also being held at the jail and had been involved in an earlier fight.

Washington was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center after receiving serious injuries, Woods said.

Washington was being held at the jail on a 90-day court order after a probation revocation hearing that stemmed from a 2013 conviction for second-degree battery. He was released from custody June 16 after being taken to the hospital.

An investigation into the incident is continuing. Woods said while no charges have been filed at this time, the person or persons involved will be charged with first-degree battery and those charges could be upgraded based on Washington’s medical condition.
