Christmas Card Fund benefits needy in community

Helping children in need is once again the goal of The Commercial’s annual fundraiser, the Christmas Card Fund.

Since 1987, The Commercial has held this fund-raising event starting on Thanksgiving Day every year with all the proceeds going to help children in need who attend the four school districts in Jefferson County.

Participating in the fund has allowed the community to raise more than $300,000. The full amount benefits the children because nothing is kept for administrative costs by the newspaper.

Through the years, we’ve heard how the fund has helped families in tremendous need. Often, teachers noticed children who came to school without winter coats, gloves or even the proper footwear. The educators would recommend the children to the school for help through the Christmas Card Fund and many of their needs would be met.

Not only does the fund help in the winter, but schools use the fund year-round to help with eyeglasses, uniforms or other issues. Often, entire families are helped when there’s a house fire or other tragedy.

Participating in giving to the Christmas Card Fund has become a tradition among area schools, churches, social clubs or other groups. A woman called the newspaper this week to see if the program would be held again because her Sunday School class participates every year.

Those who give at least $1 may have their names placed on a Community Christmas Card to be printed in The Commercial before Christmas. Contributions may be made to The Christmas Card Fund, Pine Bluff Commercial, P.O. Box 6469, Pine Bluff, AR, 71611. You may also drop your donations off at The Commercial office, 300 S.
