Elm Grove looks back at history


Elm Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 3114 S. Mississippi St., will celebrate its 171st anniversary/homecoming service at 10 a.m. Sunday. The speaker will be Rev. Bobby Butler, assistant pastor.

Elm Grove church began in the Noble Lake community in 1843 on the O. N. Johnson Plantation.

On Sunday, April 1, 1939, a tornado destroyed Elm Grove, however the membership, led by the pastor, Rev. Joe L Frazier, deacons and friends, helped rebuild the church.

Elm Grove also served as a school for the Noble Lake and Cottondale communities until 1947, according to records of the Pine Bluff School District.

In 1965, members moved from the Cottondale and Noble Lake communities and settled at the present location on Mississippi Street.

The pastor, Rev. Jesse C. Turner, has served the church since 1994.
