The Gillett Farmers and Businessmen’s Club will host the 71st annual Gillett Coon Supper on Saturday, Jan. 11 in the Gillett Elementary Gymnasium.
The doors will open and the meal served at 6 p.m. with the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include coon, baby-back ribs, brisket, rice and sweet potatoes.
The club is a non-profit and non-political club that helps with efforts such as summer programs, school programs, an educational endowment fund, athletic and scholastic awards and community service.
For the past four years, the club has awarded the Gillett Farmers and Businessmen’s Scholarship to two graduating seniors from the Gillett area. Each student received a $750 a year scholarship that is renewable for four years.
The club continues to use all proceeds from the coon supper to fund these scholarships and will award two more scholarships to seniors graduating in 2014.
“These scholarships demonstrate the commitment that the Gillett Farmers and Businessmen’s Club has for the students in our area,” the spokesman said.
The coon supper is the first and one of the largest events of its type held at the beginning of each New Year. The event will be attended by many national, state and local politicians and people from all over Arkansas and surrounding states. There will be recognition of the DeWitt High School seniors from Gillett.
