Monticello scored on its first three possessions of each half, and Brian went for three long scoring runs as the Monticello Billies took down the North Pulaski Eagles 41-8 Thursday night at Hyatt Field.
The Billies (10-0, 7-0 5A Southeast) scored 21 points in the first quarter on their way to 438 total yards of offense, including 353 yards on the ground.
Monticello scored on its first drive of the game when Handley scored his first of three TDs on a 28-yard run.
The Billies added to that lead on its second drive when quarterback Joe Carmical, who passed for 77 yards on 11-of-19 passing, found Brandon Matthews for an 8-yard touchdown pass.
Monticello scored its third touchdown in as many possessions when fullback Caleb Bryant rumbled 22 yards on a trap play out of the shotgun formation to give the Billies a 21-0 lead to end the first quarter.
Handley struck again on the Billies’ first drive of the second half. After Monticello moved back to its double-wing offense, Handley ran 24 yards for his second score of the game. The junior wingback rushed five times for 88 yards, and scored his third touchdown on the Billies next series when he took an option pitch 18 yards for his third score of the game that made the score for 35-0 in favor of the Billies.
With the mercy rule in effect, Monticello coach Van Paschal put in his second string, and Kameron Smith padded the lead late in the game with a 64-yard touchdown run down the visitor’s sideline for a 41-point advantage for the home team.
Monticello returns to action next Friday when it hosts the Vilonia Eagles in the first round of the 5A state playoffs at Hyatt Field.
