Two AARP Smart Driver Safety classes set

The AARP Smart Driver Safety Program, developed by AARP, will offer two classes for the month of May.

The first class will be held from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Jefferson Regional Medical Center, 1600 W. 40th Ave.

For those who work during the week, a class will also be held from 12:30 to 5 p.m. May 24 at Lemonwood Baptist Church in White Hall.

This is a new course for persons 50 and older and covers the normal changes in vision, hearing and reaction time that comes with age, and provides practical techniques for dealing with these changes. Drivers who complete the course will receive a certificate, which by state law, will enable drivers to receive a discount on their automobile insurance if they are 55 and older. This discount is good for three years under Arkansas state law.

The cost of the course is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members, payable to AARP at the time of the class. Participants should bring a valid driver’s license and their AARP membership card if they are members.

The four-hour multimedia course will be taught by Bob Daugherty, a licensed AARP instructor. There are no tests to pass.

Those interested, should call 870-247-4898 to pre-register. Each class will be limited to 35 participants.
