Omega Psi Phi to host annual Talent Hunt competition


The local annual Talent Hunt competition for high school students in grades nine through 12 will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Fine Arts Auditorium on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

This event is sponsored by the Tau Phi Graduate Chapter and the Tau Sigma Undergraduate Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., and is designed for high school students in the Pine Bluff area.

Participation in the Talent Hunt is open for the following forms of trained art:

• Music — Vocal and instrumental, classical, semi-classical, gospel and jazz (printed music for judges to analyze)

• Interpretive Movement to Music — ballet, modern dance and tap

• Speech — Poetry, orations, monologues, etc… (printed script for judges to analyze)

• Art — Visual, sculpture and photography

The contestant must be a high school student and has not advanced beyond a senior at the time of the local Talent Hunt. All presentations, including instrumental numbers, must be memorized, dignified and in good taste. Also, all presentations must be solo acts. No hip-hop, rock, pop, R&B or group acts will be accepted.

In addition to a monetary award and trophy, the winner of the local Talent Hunt will compete in the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. 9th District Talent Hunt competition in Oklahoma City on April 18. Competition on the district level will include students from the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. The winner of the district competition will represent the 9th District in the International Talent Hunt Exhibition in Philadelphia, Penn., this summer at the fraternity’s 2014 International Conclave. Substantial monetary awards will be presented to first, second and third-place winners at the district Talent Hunt competition. Substantial monetary awards will be presented to all participants at the International Talent Hunt Exhibition.
