The Junior League of Pine Bluff recently presented the Arkansas Rice Depot with a check for $18,000 to support its “Food for Kids” backpack program.
The donation allows the league to sponsor the backpack program at seven schools in Jefferson County, including Hardin Elementary, James Matthews Elementary, Taylor Elementary, Gandy Elementary, Townsend Park, Dollarway Middle School and Jack Robey Junior High. The program provides meals on the weekend for about 40 students at each school including breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks.
Brandi Johnston of the Arkansas Rice Depot said that because of the Junior League of Pine Bluff’s donation, Jefferson County will become a model for the state and she hopes that other communities will follow in the fight to reduce childhood hunger.
Junior League President Jennifer Kline said the league has partnered with the Arkansas Rice Depot for three years and members are very excited about this year’s donation as it totals more than the first two years’ donations combined.
The Junior League of Pine Bluff supports its community projects through fundraising. The next fundraiser “Uptown Saturday Night” is a casual ball that will take place on April 5 at Harbor Oaks Restaurant and will feature food, beverages and entertainment from Willy D’s Dueling Pianos.
The mission of the Junior League of Pine Bluff is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
