County 4-H program announces summer activities


The Jefferson County 4-H program has scheduled several educational activities available to Jefferson County youth ages 5 to 19 years old.

According to Pia Woods, county Extension agent – 4-H Youth Development, these activities are a continuing effort by the county 4-H program to provide hands-on activities for youth in the areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), leadership, citizenship and healthy living education.

Activities will include:

Make It Mondays

Who: 4-H members ages 9 to 15

What: Daylong workshops focused on Expressive Arts & Entrepreneurship.

4-Hers will end each day with a completed project to take home.

When: Mondays in June 2014, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day

Where: Jefferson County Extension Office

Cost: $5 per workshop or all for $15. Must be pre-registered and pay in advance.

Registration Deadline: May 29.

Classes limited to 25. May register for all Mondays or your pick.

4-H Kids Cooking Camp

Who: Jefferson County youth ages 9-12

What: Three-day camp with a focus on AR agriculture and cooking

When: June 4-5, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day

Where: Jefferson County Extension Office

Cost: $15 for youth registering after May 14.

Registration Deadline: May 29

District O-Rama

Who: 4-Hers qualified through county competitions.

What: District-level 4-H competition

When: June 19

Where: East Arkansas Community College, Forrest City

Registration Deadline: May 29

Fishing Derby

Who: Jefferson County youth and senior citizens

What: Jefferson County Recreation Association Annual Fishing Derby

When: June 14 at 8 a.m.

Where: McCoy Park, U.S. 270

Registration Deadline: June 6

Arkansas 4-H State Camps

Who: 4-H members ages 9-12 and 13-15

What: Three-day, two-night camp with a “Weird Science” theme

When: July 7-9

Where: AR 4-H Center, Ferndale

Cost: $85 for all ages.

Registration is through 4honline. Payment must be received prior to registration approval.

Registration Deadline: June 16.

State O-Rama

Who: Sr. 4-Hers (ages 14-19) who are district-qualified

What: Four-day State-level competition

When: July 22-25,

Where: University of Arkansas at Fayetteville

Cost: $75

Registration Deadline: June 30

Camp Cloverbud

Who: 4-H members ages 5-8

What: Two-day day camp for Cloverbuds. Workshops taught by county teen leaders.

When: July 14-15, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day

Where: Jefferson County Extension Office

Registration Deadline: July 3.
