Calendar of events


This is a listing of activities of interest to residents of Southeast Arkansas. Anyone who would like to submit entries for consideration may do so in writing to the Entertainment Calendar, P.O. Box 6469, Pine Bluff, Ark., 71611. Since all activities are subject to change, it would be wise to confirm the activity with the sponsoring organization.

January

17 — Pine Bluff youth will come together at 7 p.m. at Highland Baptist Church, 3600 W. 14th Ave., to participate in the Interested Citizens for Voter Registration’s KingFest Youth Extravaganza. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Bessie Lancelin at 870-879-4039.

19 — The Department of Music at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff will present the Vesper Choir in its 60th annual performance of Handel’s “Messiah” at 3 p.m. in the John McLinn Ross Theater of the Hathaway-Howard Fine Arts Building. The event is free and open to the public. For more information about the event, call the Department of Music at 870-575-7001.

21 — Neighbor to Neighbor will conduct its annual fundraiser, “Soup on the Go”, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 703 W. Third Ave. Hot and ready 16-ounce potato soup and chicken and dumplings soup will be available, as well as, a variety of quart size “Celebrity Soups”. Soup will be sold as takeout only. The 16-ounce hot and ready comes with crackers and dessert for $7. The celebrity quart-size soups (cold, no sides) will be available for $10. In addition to the soups, there will be baked goods available for purchase. Tickets are available in advance at Neighbor to Neighbor, 1419 Pine St., or from any Neighbor to Neighbor board member. 23 — The Arts & Science Center for Southeast Arkansas, 701 Main St., will offer its photography I class with Eric Maynard each Thursday through Feb. 20 from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. The cost of the class is $85 for members and $120 for non-members. 25 — The Pine Bluff Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will present Jabberwock 2014, a talent and variety show, at 6:30 p.m. at the Pine Bluff Convention Center Auditorium. Competition is limited to middle/junior high school, high school and college students. 25 — Pine Bluff’s Regional Park will host Polar Palooza: Run, Walk & Wade for Special Olympics. The 5K Run/Walk begins at 11:30 a.m. with check-in at 11:30. The cost is $25. The Ice Water Wade/Plunge begins at 2 p.m. with check-in at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $50. All paid participants will receive a free T-shirt. For more information, contact Travis Chisom at 870-489-3881.
